Hollywood has no concept of what 5th century Romans looked like. If I’m watching a movie about the final days of the Western Roman Empire, I should be seeing zero togas. It’s like if you made a movie about the Trump administration, you wouldn’t have people dressed like the founding fathers. That’s how wrong it is.

This is what 5th century Romans looked like:

I think the problem is that pop culture has this theme park version of history that treats time periods like distinct worlds with no fluidity between them. In Roman Times, people dressed like this vs Medieval Times when people dressed like that. But that is obviously not how time works. The end of the Western Roman Empire led directly into and overlapped with the Middle Ages, and the aesthetics we associate with medieval Europe were already long established.

On a related note, the ā€œbarbariansā€ didn’t dress like you think they did either. Less of this:

More of this:

Again, the end of the Western Roman Empire was the beginning of medieval Europe, and it already looked like it.

The notable exception was the Franks, who apparently really did dress like that:

There really is an exception to everything, and it’s usually the French.

I just went to a museum (in France, I’m French) about the Francs and I’d like to mention they are Germanic in origin, were proven to be really tall and reportedly beautiful, and they had quite exquisite jewellery and textiles, actually, with fine gold embroidery and everything (but the girls were expected to marry at 12, and they had slaves, mainly of anglo-saxon origin, that did take me aback). You can actually see the beautiful fibulas and other ornamentations on that unkind illustration up there, as well as clothing just as sophisticated as the other examples, so I don’t really see the difference. But theirs is a long history and the exhibit did focus on the later, Rome-influenced and catholicised period, so I suppose maybe they could have looked more crude before.

But by far the most lovely jewellery was gaulish, which surprised me, because even in France we tend to misrepresent them as quite simplistic. They had sumptuous torques and a love of pretty coloured glass (clearly an Egyptian influence?).

Buffy season 6 is insane. It’s like what if someone you loved died a meaningful and accepting death but you couldn’t live without them so you brought them back. And against all odds, they didn’t come back wrong, but they didn’t WANT to come back at all, and now they have to learn to live in this world again while resenting their friends and family for taking the death they willingly chose away from them. And existence is hell compared to death because in life they never get a break and never get to rest because they’re constantly needed by everyone. And they can’t chose to die a second time because they know what it would do to their loved ones who still never got over the fact that they died the first time. And also there’s a musical episode.

I made this post while I was 2 episodes into season 6 and now I need to reiterate my feelings AGAIN. They make Buffy Summers APPLY FOR A LOAN approximately two weeks after she CLAWS HER WAY OUT OF HER GRAVE.
